We've added a new element to the Performance section which provides further insight into a player's performances based on the different Action Slices available on the platform. By providing a breakdown of performance by Quantity and Quality, you will now be able to see the frequency and quality of individual action types.
Why have we added this concept?
To date, the platform has offered actionable insights based on how players add value to their team in offensive and defensive action groups. The addition of tiles showing both the frequency and quality of a particular action provides further insight into how players compare to other players in the same position and league.
By using this addition in the platform, you will be able to see the build-up of calculations that are taken into consideration to find the player’s overall ranking in individual actions compared to players in the same position and league on a per 90 minutes basis. As such, the Performance tiles essentially remain the same but now with the added breakdown of frequency and quality per action type.
How does this work in practice?
Being able to view the frequency and quality of certain action types is important when analysing players on a more granular level. To demonstrate its full functionality, see the working example provided below.
By clicking within the Performance tile of a player, you will see the same breakdown of offensive and defensive action types as before. The addition of frequency and quality comes into play when you click on a certain action type. For this example, we are looking at Mateo Kovacic and would like to further analyse their ball-carrying credentials.
Once you go to the Dribbling action slices, you will see five separate action types with two taken out because they are not deemed relevant for analysing a central midfielder. From here, the new update allows us to view within each individual action type - as pictured below by Kovacic's Carry contributions.
Each individual action type can be viewed by frequency and quality
In this case, we can see how Kovacic ranks compared to other central/defensive midfielders in the Premier League (2019/20) per 90 minutes both in terms of the frequency of the Carry and also its quality. The visualisation at the top of the screen is the multiplication of the two breakdowns below - this is the case for all action types.
As helpfully outlined to the right, the platform generates a summary of the player's strengths and weaknesses in that particular area of performance. So in this example, we can see that Kovacic ranks above average in terms of his frequency and average by quality of carrying the ball.
A further comparison between the two shows that the midfielder often carries the ball but not at the same level of quality. What we could infer from this is that Kovacic is frequently involved in carrying possession but the average quality of his carries is lower in comparison to other players in their position and league.
Essentially, this new update provides you with the opportunity to perform this working example for any player within the platform. It adds further insight to a player's performance and outlines the key principles behind their performance in several areas across the pitch.
Why can't I see this for Defensive Positioning?
As outlined in this helpful post, Defensive Positioning is calculated by a model that measures performance in a different way than all of the other action types.
Therefore, this concept is not applicable to the frequency vs quality framework as shown in all of the other nine action slices and subsequent categories. The Defensive Positioning tile and subcategories is based on a value-added concept which still provides good insight into how a player performs in certain areas of the game from a defensive perspective.
