Each of our 22 Player Roles is defined as a set of characterising tasks and duties during matches. For instance, we define a Wing Back as a full back who is highly involved in offensive actions mostly comprising of crosses, dribbles and chance creation in wide areas.

To capture how well a player performs the characterising tasks and duties for each player role, we extract a set of 515 advanced statistics. These statistics include, among others, the number of saves from short-range goal attempts, the number of goalkeeper interceptions outside the penalty area, and the number of passes received in specific areas of the pitch.

Based on how well a player performs on these advanced statistics, our machine learning model automatically rates the player on each of the 22 player roles leading to their Player Role profile.
